Note 1: A hand-written copy of the birth certificate of Arthur John Boyce that is in Betty’s handwriting clearly shows that Arthur John Boyce was born on 13th September 1870 at Exeter Road, West Teignmouth. This agrees with the census data. His birth was registered Sept 1870 Newton Abbot 5b 121.

Note 2: Anthony found that Arthur’s wife Mary died in 1874, 17 years after they were married when young Arthur was only 4 years old. Her death was registered Newton Abbot March 1874 5b 48. She was aged 42.

Note 5: Arthur John Boyce died 1st March 1922 aged 51. I was told that he died in a ‘flu epidemic. Grandma Boyce recorded the death in her bible "A devoted Father and Husband and beloved by all who knew him". The death registration at Honiton, March 1922 5b 40 would confirm the cause of death. His estate of £4175 was left to his wife.

Personal Notes:

We know very little about Arthur John’s early years except that his mother died when he was 4 and he was brought up in Teignmouth by his father and presumably his eldest sister Elizabeth. In the 1891 census he was working with his father as an assistant watchmaker in Teignmouth. Between 1891 and 1896 he moved to London where he married Louisa Marie Herbert. They married by special licence on 7th March 1896 at the Registry Office, Marloes Road, Kensington. Louisa's father was Herbert Herbert an Oil and Colour Merchant. Arthur's father, Arthur Boyce, was described as a Jeweller. His marriage certificate describes him as watchmaker and he was living at 144 Holland Park Avenue, Kensington. For whatever reason Louisa Marie was married without her father’s consent. Louisa was already 21 so reaching her majority was not an issue. I was told Arthur and Louisa Marie met in London where Louisa was nursemaid to the Earl of Devonshire. Presumably this stemmed from her mother’s family link to Powderham. There is no evidence to support this. 1901 census living at Devonshire Villa, Lambert Road, Finchley. Arthur, 30, watchmaker/employer, born Teignmouth ; Louise M aged 26 born London; Arthur G, 4; Marjorie A, 2; Leslie H, 7 months [children born Finchley]: and Winifred Lawrence, servant. 1911 census living at BrImley House, Woodhouse Lane, N. Finchley with 9 rooms: Arthur John Boyce, head, 40 (married 15 years; 6 children all alive), ophthalmic optician, born Teignmouth; Louise Marie Boyce, 36, wife, born Kentish Town; Arthur George, 14; Marjorie Annie, 12; Leslie Herbert, 10; Ronald Lines, 8; Gordon Beresford, 6; Leicester John, 4; all born N. Finchley. There was also a boarder assistant in shop – jewellery. The family was still in Finchley in June 1917 when Francis (Jimmy) was born. In Nov that year their eldest son, Arthur, was killed at the battle of the Somme. They must have moved to Devon shortly afterwards as Leicester was at Kings School Ottery in Sept 1919. They set up business at Wellington House, Fore Street, Sidmouth. 1920 Electroal Register living at Wellington House, Fore St Sidmouth Arthur and Louise (Leslie is included). 1921 ditto Grandma Boyce (Louisa) remained in Sidmouth until she died in 1952.
