John Curling – Will summary
PRC17/85/35a PRC16/377C/16, see also PRC 16/580/18 made 27 Feb 1720 proved 29 Apr 1721 • John Curling of Chilton in the Parish of St Laurence, Isle of Thanet, Yeoman • All property in the parish of St Peter the Apostle, Thanet to wife Mercy, • When wife dies or remarries: - all property in parish of St Laurence in Thanet to 3 sons Daniel, Alexander and Thomas to be shared equally - all property in St Peter’s, Thanet to son William • to wife Mercy, such household goods as she pleases • to daughter Ann £100 within a year • to daughter Mary £100 at age 18 or on day of marriage • to daughter Margaret £100 at age 18 or on day of marriage • to his 3 children John, Mercy the wife of George Osborne and Elizabeth wife of Henry Harnet 20/- apiece to buy rings • Residue – ready money, plate linen, household goods, stock, crop, cattle, corn, grain, goods, chattels, personal Estate to son Daniel • son Daniel to be executor Witnesses Elizabeth Noble, Wm Noble & Jo Hanker Cotton refers to the will of John Curling without indicating any of the content. The will confirms John’s wife as Mercy and specifies his sons as Daniel, Alexander, Thomas, William and John and his daughters as Ann, Mary, Margaret, Mercy (wife of George Osborne) and Elizabeth (wife of Henry Harnett). The will begs some questions: why did the three eldest children John, Mercy and Elizabeth not receive more? Why did John (the eldest son) not inherit any property? Was it because John had already married (and therefore been ‘given’ his inheritance) and was living either in Curling property in St Peter’s (which would tie in with the John Curling/Mary Kirby marriage); or had he fallen out with his father and been disowned/disinherited; or, did he, when he married, move into property owned by his father in law? It is also strange that he is not, as the eldest son, named the executor. |
