Liam Brewer says "William Brewer born 1855 in either Devon or Cornwall. He came to Ireland with his regiment and was stationed in Cork. He married Ellen McDonnell (from Carlow). They had four children - William Edward (1880), James (1882), Joseph - my grandfather (1891) and Mary (1898). There were other children who did not survive infancy."
British Army Service Records 1760-1913 FMP gives: Royal Artillary became shoesmith. In Dublin 1875 possibly until 1879. Fermoy 1890. Newcastle on Tyne in hospital three times in period 1892- 93. Discharged 14 June 1893. Army papers give: enlisted Topsham Barracks 22 May 1873, aged 19, blacksmith. Height 63.5 inches chest 34 in, dark complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes. Born Alphongotn, Devon, Father James Brewer, blacksmith, Alphington, Devon brother Samuel married Ellen 28 March 1879, Dublin, his intended place of residence after discharge: c/o Mrs McDonald, 13 Aldborough Place, North Strand, Dublin. children William Edward b Ballincollig (near Cork, Ireland) on 8 Jan 1880; James b Aldershot 25 Oct 1881; unamed child b Woolwich 15 Mar 1884 died 18 Oct 1888; Frederick John b Bristol 10 (or 18) Feb 1887, Joseph no place of birth b 5 Aug 1890. but not Mary. How is it the date of the record is 1879, the year of his marriage. He was 5ft 3.5in, Born in Alphington Devon. Served in South African 1884 1891 Fermoy 1892 Newcastle on Tyne.
